My undergraduate training was completed at Otago University and following this I worked as a Flying Doctor in South Australia for two years. I then returned to New Zealand and entered the NZ Advanced Orthopaedic training programme, attaining FRACS (Orth) in 1995. Further experience was gained in Australia and USA.
I commenced practice in Hawke’s Bay in 1996 and for 10 years, up until 2014, was Head of the Orthopaedic Department at Hawke’s Bay Hospital. I practise as a Consultant both at Hawke’s Bay Hospital and in private practice at Royston Hospital where I am a member of the Royston Hospital Clinical Advisory Committee. I am a founding member of the Hawke’s Bay Orthopaedic Group, created in 2016.
As well as the special interests noted above, I also cover general orthopaedics. I am a Southern Cross Affiliated Provider for hemi-knee replacement, total knee joint replacement, total hip joint replacement, carpal tunnel release.
Procedures and Treatment
Orthopaedic surgery is concerned with treating conditions involving the musculo-skeletal system, which is made up of bones, joints, ligaments, tendons. I use both surgical and non-surgical methods to treat a wide range of problems, including trauma (injury), sports injuries, degenerative diseases (e.g. arthritis), infections, tumours and congenital disorders (those present at birth).
You should become as well informed about your problem as you can.
You will find many differing opinions on the multiple sites on the Internet, so if you are getting what seems like conflicting advice please say so and ask questions so you can be involved and share responsibility in the management of your condition.
Referral Expectations
GP referral letter, which will include:
1. Any relevant letters and hospital reports
2. Any X-ray, CT and MRI reports
3. Your ACC number, if you have one
